Troubleshooting Common Issues With MyEtherWallet

Cryptocurrency is becoming increasingly popular, and the number of wallets available has grown exponentially. Get Ready

Before you can get started, there are a few things you will need to have on hand:

• A computer that has never been connected to the internet (an air-gapped computer)

• An Ethereum address (you can get one from Coinbase or any other exchange)

• A USB drive or CD-ROM drive 

• The MyEtherWallet software package downloaded onto your air-gapped computer

Once you have all these items, you are ready to begin creating your offline wallet.

Step 2 – Create Your Wallet File  Now that you have everything you need, it’s time to create the actual wallet file. To do this, open up the MEW software on your air-gapped computer and select “Create New Wallet” from the menu bar. You will then be prompted to enter your Ethereum address (which you should have obtained in step 1). Once you enter your address, MEW will generate a JSON file containing all of your account information. This file is what will be used as your offline wallet file. It is important that you save this file somewhere safe, as it contains all of your account information and must not fall into the wrong hands.  

Step 3 – Move Your Wallet File Offline Now that you have created the wallet file, it’s time to move it off of the air-gapped computer and store it securely in an offline location. To do this, simply copy the JSON file onto either a USB drive or CD-ROM disk and store it somewhere safe (like a fireproof safe). Once stored safely in an offline location, no one will be able to access your funds without physical access to both the JSON file and your Ethereum address.  

Step 4 – Accessing Your Funds Now that your funds are securely stored in an offline location, accessing them is simple! All you need is access to both the JSON file AND your Ethereum address (which should also be stored in an offline location). Simply plug in both elements into MEW on another non-air-gapped device and follow the prompts provided by MEW to access your funds!
